TAR SEALING MAIN HIGHWAYS.

(To the Editor). Sir, —I was very sorry indeed to read in Monday’s paper that the H.B. County Council has made a decision to 'tar seal” our HastingsNapier main highway from the Hastings boundary to the Karamu bridge. Surely this road is deserving of at least a “hot-mix” bitumen surface similar to the Hastings-Havelock road and 1 feel sure that the Hastings Borough Council, if approached, could do the work for the Council on similar terms to that of the latter. It must be borne in mind that the Hastings-Napier road via Mangateretere and Clive will always carry the heaviest traffic including the Government buses and the heavy duty ta-ucks that ply between the two towns, and 1 feel sure if a count were taken of the vehicles that pass over the Karamu bridge in a single day the facts would astonish even Mr T. E. Crosse, who experience must tell him what a waste of money it is always not to do a job thoroughly, as the best is always the cheapest especially so; when the traffic warrants it.—Yours, etc., “BEST IN THE LONG RUN.”
