A strange and almost expensive experience befel a well-known Carrington Road farmer on Sunday (states the New Plymouh “Herald.”) Driving owards his home he was surprised to see smoke issuing from under the front of his car. He immediately lifted the bonnet and to his amazement discovered a burning heap of straw and paper on the top of the engine. The fire was extinguished before any damage was done, the carburettor fortunately being dry. It is thought tSiat a rat had found the engine warm on Friday afternoon, when the car was last used, and, seizing the opportunity, had proceeded to build its next near the seat of the warmth. Birds, it is known, build in queer places, but the palm for originality and resourcefulness must certainly be awarded this rat. A jiulgnieiit debtor was was sued for £l7 for groceries at the Wanganui Court, said it was about a month’s supply for his wife and family of four. The Magistrate remarked that he knew something about what it cost to keep a family, and if he had to pay £l7 per month for groceries, he would be in the witness box tuu before very lung.
