SOCCER FOOTBALL.

THE CANADIAN TEAM CIVIC RECEPTION. The Canadian Soccer team arrived in Hastings by the mail train last night, when they were welcomed by the Mavor (Mr. G. A. Maddison), the president of the Rotary Club (Mr. E. J W Hallett) and several Rotary members. Later the Mayor accorded the team a civic reception in the Y.M.C.A rooms. In the course of hi s address, His Worship said the welcome of the people of Hastings was more than a mere courtesy, it was a welcome prompted by the fraternal feeling existing fop Canada by the people of Hawke’s Bay. It was also a welcome from a sporting people to their guests, not only as footballers but as gentlemen both on and off the field of play Their visit would stimulate the Association code in New Zealand and, most of all. it would assist in the fostering of brotherhood between the two sister Dominions. He hoped they would enjoy their stay and carry away with them happy recollections of their visit. Mr. Adam, manager of the team, thankc-d His Worship for his warm welcome. He was particularly impressed with New Zealand, which he considered was rightlv termed the gem of the Empire. He referred to their visit as tending to strengthen the bonds of Empire and he felt that, though the cost of the trip was considerable it was well worth while in helping to draw the two countries ton-other in closer relationship The Rev F. A. Bennett extended a welcome from thn Maoris.
