WAIPAWA.

The fortnightly korero of the Waipawa Savage Club was held on Thursday evening. In the absence of Chief Savage N. McKay, ViceChief D. H. Edwards presided. There was a large membership present, a very pleasing programme was submitted those contributing being: Savages White. Blackie. Wood. Edwards, Strang. Wedde, Barnes. A small but efficient orchestra, under the baton of Savage Maher, contributed several well-selected items Savages S. Bott and W. Bust were the capable accompanists.

A new sawmill is under construction near the railway station for Mr F. Orbell. The mill makes the second in that locality. Several pheasants were liberated at Omakere on Saturday by the Acclimatisation Society, At the recent ploughing match held at Patangata, Mr Harty Rathbone was successful with his mare Soultite in the ladies’ jumping competition. and being the second year in succession becomes the owner of a valuable challenge cup presented bv Mrs M. L. Tod. A large number of football enthusiasts left here either by motor ur the special trains on Saturday for the Kanfurlv Shield match at Mastertoil. The details of the play were received bv wireless by Messrs Liiribrick Bros, and also by Mr J. Middles, and created considerable local interest, large crowds being outside these business premises following the game. SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Waipawa School Committee wag held on Thursday evening. Present Messrs H. M. Rathbone (chair). S. Houghton (secretary). C. Critchley. N. \ erran. John Corskie. W. Cade. W. Yates L. Prat-ley, and H. C. Collett. Leave of absence was granted Mr L. Strang. The headmaster, in his report, stated that durin" the month visits had been paid to the school bv Mr Mcllwraith (inspector L Mr Price (physical instructor), Mr Hurdsfield (agricultural instructor), and Mr Boland, the Board’s architect. The attendance at the school suffered last month as a result of the wet weather.

Messrs Collett and Corskie were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Waipawa Branch of the Women’s Institute, held recently in St. Peter’s schoolroom, was largely attended. Mrs Jas. Bihby presided, and introduced Mrs Stop, a visitor from England, who gave a demonstration in brush-making several members making article* under her tuition. Mrs Stop gave a very interesting talk on her exptiienoes as a member of th© Institute in England. in which she remarked that in these exchange of views between the Home and colonial institutes each could learn much from the other. The speaker said she was most favourably impressed bv the beautiful war memorials erected in New Zealand, and those which particularly appealed to her were the Rest Rooms. During the afternoon a table of saleable goods was in evidence and readily purchased. At the close of the meetin<▼ afternoon tea was partaken of. Mesdames Daily and John Corskie were the hostesses for the afternoon.
