WEEKLY PAYMENTS INCREASED DEATH BENEFIT RAISED TO £lOOO. Wellington, Aug. 21. Substantia) increases in the death benefit and in the weekly payments during total incapacity are provided for in an amendment to the Workers Compensation Act of 1922, which was introduced into the Hotise last night by Governor-General’s message. The extended benefits will come into force on January 1 next. In the original Act, compensation is payable to dependants in case of death at the rate of 156 times deceased’s average weekly ernings, or £2OO, whichever is the larger, but not exceeding £750. From January 1 next it is proposed that compensation shall bo 208 times the man’s weekly earnings, or £3OO, but not exceeding £lOOO. During any period of total incapacity the weekly payments for accidents amount to 58 per cent, of the worker’s average weekly earnings. It is now proposed to increase the benefit to 66 2-3 per cent, of the average earnings. The maximum weekly payment during incapacity will be increased from £3 15/- to £4, and the aggregate amount of weekly payments where incapacity lasts for a lengthy period i s to be increased from £750 to £lOOO.
