Association Football

FINAL FOR HIBBERT SHIELD Y.M.C.A. BEAT WHAKATU. Whakatu won the toss and played downhill, ■ but this brought them little advantage. Y.M, were first to attack through Clary, but McCulloch sent the ball down to Bardiner and Whakatu pressed. Young anti Kilmour played great football and their kicking was a feature of the game. The visiting forwards bad little cliance to get through and when they did Thompson was too safe to let anything through. Although Whakatu were without Edgar they were othewise at full strength, but they were not playing their usual good game. The first half was very even, although Whakatu did most of the attacking, but their shooting was very poor. There was no score at half time.

Whakatu got away from the kick off but he ball was sent back to Gilmour. The exchanges were even and the respective defences were too strong to allow the forwards to shoot much. The only score came after 20 minutes. A rush by Y.M., a miskick, a scramble, an’ opportunity snapped up, and the ball was in the net, Clark having tapped it into the corner. In spite of the reverse Whakatu did not play any better and Y.M. were more prominent from then on. YVhakatu almost equalised twice but Thompson was very safe and gathered in everything that came to him. Play went up and down field till the final whistle sounded, leaving Y.M. the winners by the only goal. Mr. T. Atkinson refereed.
