A BOMB THAT DID NOT EXPLODE. London. March 28. The “Daily Express” says a racing sensation threatened at the week-bnd in connection with King Club’s win in the Lincolnshire Handicap. Dawson, trainer of Zionist, which was second, posted an objection to the winner on the ground that a partnership in the horse between Bellerby and Sowden was undisclosed. At settling day wa& -Monday the objection was a bombshell, affecting bbts all the world over totaling £2,000,000. Many bookmakers had already paid on King Club and would be obliged also to pay over on Zionist, while the popular double on Zionist and Jack Hprner, winner of the ( Grand National, would become opera- I tive. Fortunately, late on Sunday I Dawson cancelled his objection.—(A. and N.Z.) DIVOTS. Dug by “The Delver.”’ This evening nominations will be ; taken lor Manawatu, with forfeits for ; the Produce and Manawatu Stakes, | and on ( Wednesday acceptances are j due for Canterbury, with final paymeats for the Great Autumn and Great Easter Handicaps and J or the Champagne and Challenge Stakes. I The successful Auckland light-weight H. Wiggins was married on Wednesday to Miss E. Moberley. Further riding engagements an- I HGunced for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap ajre W. Baguy for Cawnpore, W. Jones lor Charlady, and J. Gray for Tall Timber. It is understood that F. E. Jones will ride Listening Post at the Canteri bury Jockey Club’s autumn i.'icecing. i The Southland crack is reported to be I very well. Merry Damon’s chance in the Easter ■ Handicap at Ellerslie was greatly fancied by some Auckland writers. Unfortunately, however, Mr. F. Hail’s Poiydamon gelding struck himselt during his work and, as a result, a as | taken out of the race. The injury is 1 not regarded as serious, and Merry Damon may be seen out on the second day of the meeting. The young Surveyors in training are shaping well in their work. At Trentnam on Saturday the best halfmile of the morning was the 51sec. oi Theodolite, in W. Young’s stable. He appears at the foot of the acceptances for the Wairarapa Two-year-old . Stakes. Lysander and Deluge were companions in a half-mile flutter at Wanganui on Saturday, in which they finished together, though Deluge appeared to have it on the colt at the end. The time registered was 49. Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s Absurd geld- , ing Nincompoop, who has been something of a disappointment since his early success in Australia, has been j retired from the training tracks for a few weeks’ spell. ' After all, there seems no doubt new as to Glentruin’s destination tor Easter, as Christchurch papers announce her shipment on Friday last to Wellington, whi.e Wellington exchanges mention her as passing on from : there to Ellerslie by train under Mci Aulay’s care. Many dabblers in early peculation on both the Christchurch j and the Auckland doubles will have been bitten by her scratching for the , Ellerslie Easter Handicap and her dis- ; ' appearance from the Riccarton tracks. , As she has now no engagement for ; I Saturday, she has no doubt in view the ' second day’s big sprint at the A.R.C. i meeting and the Avondale All-aged , Stakes to be run at Ellerslie on ■ Saturday week. An interested watcher of the train- ■ ing work at Ellerslie on Thursday ’■ morning was the erstwhile jockey W. : Brown, who rode that good horse Nelson to victory in three successive ; Auckland Cups back in the eighties. ' This was his first visit in many years to the scene of his historic successes. From more detailed accounts of Saturday’s Franklin meeting now to hand it appears that Mr. E. Montgomery’s five-year-old Lucullus —Tact gelding Tactician fell opposite the enclosure the first time round in the | Cup and broke his leg. He was do- ' stroyed. The rider (Cammick) was in- : iured. At a subsequent inquiry Nixon, tlie rider of Gala Day, was suspended for a fortnight fur boring. He was held responsible for the accident. At the same meeting J. Gray, rider of Golden Kyist in the Waiuku Hack Welter, was cautioned for careless ndin<r and interfering with Appellant. The Clarenceux gelding Sayonara evidently had a very unexpected win in the Bangor High-weight Handicap at the Hororata (Canterbury) meeting on Saturday, for lie started the absolute outsider in a field of eight and paid a great dividend. His success is probably attributable to the fact that at the entrance to the straight the leader, Lady Clarenceux, fell, bringing down Gay Queen, Rigel, Mid Gay Jim. F. E. Jones, rider of Lady Clarenceux, was i badly shaken, and was unable to ride im any of the later events. The three-year-old Nassau gelding Bahama was another great outsider to pay a dividend on Saturday, as he was tenth down the betting for the Bombay Handicap at the Franklin meeting. He, however, was beaten into second place by the favourite, Serang. but only by the narrow margin of a neck. Southlanders have quite a number of recruits to the jumping ranks among which they hope to find something that may redeem the South Island’s lost prestige in that branch of the sport. One ol the most promising is the Fleetham gelding Grand Fleet, who last week jumped several of the Southland Racing Club’? lighter steeplechase obstacles well under the guidance of A. S. Ellis. He is being given ample time to season by his experienced mentor, G. Hope. The Bezonian horse Bisogne is leaving some good stock. Already this season his progeny have won close on £6OOO in stakes, those contributing to that total being Vaward, Avola, Bqnogne, Benzora, Banjuke. Glengariff, Shut Eye, Sovena, Monaghan, Orcades and Kenyon, while there are a large number of likely looking youngsters now in training. The five-year-old Nassau—Cassock gelding Sottano is said to have given excellent displays for a novice at the jumping game on both days at Bulls, and it is predicted that he should have little difficulty in picking up a stake or two during the next month or so. The old adage “horses for courses” may be worth keeping in mind in regard to the coming Easter meeting at Ellerslie, says the Wanganui writer “Achilles.” Two years ago Hipo won the Easter Handicap carrying 6.13, and last year with 8.6 in the saddle he gave Reremoana a great race. Each of these miles, it may be observed, was done in the remarkably good tinie of 1.38. In this year’s contest Hipo is in with 8.7, and his running at Opunake shows he is far from a spent light. Some good judges look to him. Fool’s Paradise and Royal Divorce were booked to leave Trentham for Riccarton this week. Prior to the Rangitikei meeting Fool’s Paradise was responsible for some excellent work at

Trentham and he is said to have been supported by his connections both days at Bulls, but third on each occasion was, apparently, the best he could Jo. Royal Divorce has been more or less unsound for a considerable time, but the soft track at Bulls was just what his trainer was wishing for, and the races the English horse had there should improve his condition in view of the Easter racing. “Lady Ridicule has never looked better,, and like her stable mate, Ballymoy 11., is in blooming health,” writes the Auckland correspondent of a southern paper. “Lady Ridicule will be hard to beat in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap, and one can commend backers to follow her, but do not forget Ballymoy IL, for she is exceptionally good and has improved vastly of late.” A hack that has raced fairly well at country fixtures, says the same writer, is Te ’ Kawana. He will most likely race at the Wairarapa fixture at Easter and if he fails to run well many keen observers in Auckland will be surprised. Discussing the chance of the topweight in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap, an exchange writer points to him as being remarkably well handicapped when one considers that at the last spring meeting of the C.J .C. he won the Criterion Haiidn-ap carrying 9.3 in the wonderful time of 1.24 3-5. On the third day of the meeting he was less than a neck from the winner when ho ran third m the C.J.C. Handicap with 9.13 in the saddle. His next appearance in public was at the A.R.C. summer meeting, where, carrying 9.7, he won the first division of the Railway Handicap from a first-ciass sprinter in Cawnpore, who had only 7.0 on his back. His only other appearance at that meeting was in the King’s Plate, in which he carried 9.3 to victory, and ran the mile in 1.39 1-5. Put by ttien until the autumn meeting at Wanganui, the son of Hallowmas, while looking very much-on the pretty side, beat that brilliant filly Lady Cavendish in the Jackson Stakes. As we filly was considerably more forward that "Reremoana, the latter’s performance was a great one. On this any student of form must admit that despite his 9.11 in the Easter Handicap it would be a difficult matter to put one’s finger at this stage on the name of one likely to heat him. Believers in the fiction that horses “left off the card” always pay dividends should note that everywhere but at this end of Hawke’s Bay the name of Lady Robinson, Tst 31b, appears as an acceptor for the Onslow Stakes, the ■ two-year-old handicap race to be run at Ellerslie on Saturday next. This quarter of the Dominion seems to be singularly unfortunate in the dropping of names from acceptance lists telegraphed to the press. Why is this thus? Lady Robinson would seem to be an as yet unknown quantity on the racing track, as her name does not appear on any of the records up to date. I
