N.Z. PROFESSIONAL MEETING. OPENING DAY’S EVENTS. Dunedin, Dec. 29. The first day of the New Zealand professional championship meeting was held at the Caledonian ground to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, and some fine running was Avitncssed. D. AlcLcnnan (Canterbury) added to his reputation as one of the finest runners seen in New Zealand for a long time past. He von his heat in the .100 yards in time given as 9 4-5, but this time must be open to doubt, as he was running against a fairly brisk breeze. He won the final in 10 1-5. E. Cook was second and C. W. Pearson third. J. Grafton (14 yards) Avon bis heat and the final of the 220 yards handicap easily. A. A. Cameron (9J) was second, and W. A. Cubit (14) third. Time, 23 2-5. The 880 yards handicap was Avon by ('. A. Bone (12 yards) .1, H. Escrect (20 yards) 2. W. Archer (35 yards’) 3. 'rhe time Avas given as, 2min 45secs. The mile championship Avas run twice, as on the first occasion it was found a lap short had been covered. Fortunately the three plachigs in the first run were the same as in the second—J. I’. Spillane, scratch (1000 ft. 3in) won the 161 b hammer throw. AV. Murray. ser (95ft 2in) was second. A. A. Cameron, scr. (21ft 9in) Avon the broad jump handicap, J. Murphy (241 n 20ft Ilin. 2; T. C. Loe (20inJ, 20ft 9in, 3. E. P. O’Shea and AVells were first and second in the inile cyclo championship. Tn this event AVard, Parker, Henderson and IMackay fell in the last lap, AVells, who xvas then last, riding Ihrough for second place. Time. 2.33 The three-mile championship was won by O’Shea. Avith AVells second and Mackey (Christchurch) third. The big cyclo handicap of £5O, see•md £lB. third £9, fourth £3, was won bv Mackey from the 65yds mark, F. (/. AVard (165yds) second. J.
