OFFENSIVE TRADES.

SPECIAL CHRISTCHURCH AREA

Offensive trades and the mosquito nuisance were subjects discussed at a conference recently held between the By-laws and Works Committee of the Christchurch City Council and the Medical Officer of Health, and at the last meeting of the council the committee submitted a report, stating that Dr. Telford. Medical Officer of Health, urged that the time had arrived for the setting apart of a special area in which those trades classified as offensive under the Health Act should be confined. After discussing the matter fully, it was decided to recommend the council to convene a conference early next year of all .members of each body within the metropolitan area to consider setting apart a special area in which offensive* trades may be established.

The question of the mosquito nuisance was also brought under the notice of the Medical Officer of Health. Dr. Telford stated that it was a mistaken idea that mosquitoes bred only in cesspools, their habits being to lay eggs m fresh tain water or streams. All localities in which water was lying should be drained and the edges of pools treated by spraying them with kerosene, liquid creosote, or crude oil. Liquid creosote placed on the inside of window sills would prevent the invasion of mosquitoes into dwellings. Mosquitoes do not travel far from their breeding-places, 400 yards being considered the maximum distance they go. The report was adopted.
