Napier’s Mardi Gras

A WHIRL OF JOLLIFICATION. VERY LARGE ATTENDANCE. Napier’s 1925 Mardi Gras was held on Boxing Day under glorious weather conditions. Early in the morning large numbers of visitors began to arrive from the country, and by noon there was a record attendance, which showed that the attraction had not lost any of its popularity. Side shows, merry-go-irounds, hoop-las. a circus and countless other novelties attracted young and old alike, while the band rotunda was the scene of many novelties.

The procession, which was composed of many amazing entries, quickly attracted the interest of the spectators. During the day great assistance was given by the Napier Marine Band, the Citizens Band and the Highland Pipe Band.

The jollifications were continued in the evening, the Parade again presenting a fine sight. Shortly after nine o’clock the lights were switched off and the fireworks display commenced. A short concert programme was given by the Elite concert party, and the many competitions passed off well.
