OBITUARY.
SIR PAUL VINOGRADOFF. (Received 29, 9.39 a.m.) Paris, Doe. 20. “Le Temps” announces the death of Professor Sir Paul Vinogradoff.—(A. and N.Z.) Sir Paul Vinogradoff. an AngloRussian scholar, was born at Kostroma. Russia in 1854. He became a professor of history at Moscow University. An enthusiastic educationalist, his attitude brought him into conflict with the authorities, and about 1890 lie left Russia for England. He devoted much study to the economic condition of early Encl and. and in an artide in tho “English Historical Review’’ he destroyed the old theory of Folk la nd. substituting one accepted as correct bv practically all the authorities. His “Villainage in England” (1892) was an exhaustive examination of this subject, and throw much light on various obscure problems. Other books include “The Growth oi a Manor” (1905) ; “English Society in tho 11th Century” (1908); and books in Russian. In 1903 he went to Oxford as Cnrnus professor of jurisprudence. In 1917 he was knighted.
