DUNEDIN WOOL SALE.

A FIRMER TENDENCY. Dunedin, Dec. 20. The first wool sale of the Dunedin series commenced here on Saturday night, when a catalogue of 15,064 bales was to be submitted. The sale did not commence till 7.30 o’clock, and two firms’ catalogues, totalling 7721 bales, were offered. From the outset it was apparent that there was more life in the market than could have been anticipated from recent reports received from northern centres. The catalogues submitted attracted strong competition from Bradford principally and from America, while the Continent was active for good nieces and bellies. The local mills were buying sparingly. The following range of' prices, which gives a general idea of the market, may be quoted:— l6d to 20jd ; fine halfbreds, I7d to 203 d; medium halfbred, 15d to 20d; fine crossbreds, ll.’d to 13|d ; coarse crossbreds. lOd to’ 12ld ; pieces, up to bellies, up to 13d; locks, up to 9d. From these the first impressions of the majority of buyers and brokers concerned are that the values for fleece wools are from Id to Id dearer than the last Timaru sale. A few good pieces were on offer, and prices for these can be said to bo unchanged from those current at northern sales.
