THE EARTHQUAKE.
VIOLENT SHOCK AT AVELLINGTON. Wellington, Dec. 10 At about a quarter past one this morning nearly everyone in AVellington was awakened by an earthquake. It commeuced with a pronounced tremor, then a more or less vertical jolt of some intensity, followed by gentle oscillations in a north and south direction, gradually diminishing. Locally the shock was not severe enough to cause any serious damage, but small, patches of plaster fell in some buildings and the main jolt was sufficiently severe to jangle the bells of the Post Office clock. A number of pendulum clocks were stopped. In the old Mount street Cemetery the ’quake destroyed one of the oldest memorials in Wellington, the fine Celtic Cross in memory of Father J. P. O’Reilly, the first priest in AA’ellington. It was erected 45 years ago and was about ten feet high. Nothing now’ remains except the pedestal, the cross having broken into pieces when it was thrown to the ground.
