A Wairarapa note says that Merry Day is to contest the Manawatu Cup and suggests that tho long wide straight at Awapuni will suit trainer B. Burgess’s mare. De Luxe is reported as doing steady work again at Masterton. and the brother to Kilceit will be on band %. carry Mr. Kemball’s colours during tlie holidays. Imperial Spark was recently injured in a shunting accident at Palmerston North, hence his non-appearance till ’Xmas time. -Mr. 1). Barry has booked accommodation for four horses at Ellerslie and will probably take Automne. AUto- , matoil. Ngawati and Threadneedle to : Auckland. Lucullent will Bo at the same stables. ! That once good handicap horse Insurrection (Kilbroney—Ruthful) has lately been doing duty as a drover’s hack, and though an effort was rei cently made to get him hack to racing condition, it is not likely ho will be persevered with. Queen Arch, winner of the Avondale Guineas, is spoken’of as likely to get through her work nicely at Ellerslie and be on the winning list again before long. The Chokehoi’e stable is most certainly out of luck just now. Dark Spot is reported from Christchurch to be slightly amiss at present. This will probably mean the cancellation of his Auckland trip, leaving Conti epiece as Sir George Clifford’s only representative at the meeting. R. Knox, says a Wairarapa correspondent. does not take Lady Fingers to tho track at present, but she is not actually turned out. and she may be entered for the holiday meetings in the hope that suHicient rain wil' fall io take the sting out of the ground. Ro.yal Tea, a winner at Takapuna, and Cawnpore, who ran prominently there, are both mentioned in an Auckland exchange as doing good track work since that promises well for coming events in which they are engaged. The Christchurch writer “Argus” says that Deucalion was a trifle sore, alter hi< win in the Methvon Cud at Riccarton on Saturday. His trainer. D. Au extraordinary happening was associated with the Taumaruiiui RacingClub s annual meeting on Saturday" says the “Waikato Times.” Through' a mistake m ihe hoisting of the flags the tqtalisator was still open when the i held in the second race was despatched and the clerks were busily taking money even when the horses were airly in the straight. Kveiything happened so quickly, however, that it is doubtful Whether the crowd had anv time to take an unfair advantage of the olhcial mistake. “Little ‘Tommy’ Green, who piloted the erratic Askari to victory in the Feikhug Cup.” says an exchange, “is not only one of the most promising apprentices, but is a lad of many parts. Favoured with a first-rate college education, he excelled in class work and all branches of sport notably swimming and handball, and was tipped off for something different from a jockey, but the call of the Turf proved too much for him. and he entered R. Hatch s stable, and appears I likely to go far in the racing game. . A quiet, unassuming little fellow, we I can do with more ot his kind.” i Some of “Achilles’ ” Wanganui I track notes for last Tuesday; | “Lysander was given useful work, i This colt has muscled up and should [ strip in great fettle at Ellerslie. “The Thorn and Mask were again given a couple of rounds on the plough sprinting over the last couple of furlongs. The Thorn showed to better advantage than the son of Limond, who got knocked out. at Feilding and has not yet freshened up again. “Motley is in great heart at present and promises to he capable of one of her most brilliont efforts at Christmas time. AVith 7.10 she reads as well as anything else in the Railway Handicap at Auckland, but her mission will be

the Palmerston North Stakes, in which she will probably be a warm favourite. She was given a round this morning and finished up over ihe last three furlongs at three-quarter pace, moving very sweetly. “Deluge- has been very nicely handicapped in tho Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, and with 8.4 tho son of Absurd would have a “royal chance” if he could be got to the post lit and well. Unfortunately, tho chestnut has been sore for some time past and M. Raynor has not boon able to give him much work. This morning Deluge was given a throe furlongs sprint, with Adavale, and ho covered the distance very comfortably in 37.}sec., a time which he could have improved upon easily had he been, extended. However, he appeared very sore behind after tho gallop, and it seems very doubtful whether Raynor will bo able to race him at Ellerslie.” Some- of "AATialebonc’s” front Ellerslie, also, on Tuesday last:— On No. 2 Grass.—Royal Tea wont over six furlongs in I.2s.—Tactictian. Joy Ride and Brushwood Boy finished in that order over six furlongs in 1.18 4.s.—Cawnporo was in front of Uralla and Pelham at the end of live furlongs in 1.5 1-s.—Mosaic ran six furlongs in 1.19 4-5, and Polonett and Kamehamoha covered a similar distance in 1.20 1-s.—Royal Form beat Surveyor over six furlongs, the last four taking 54 2-s.—Ballymoy 11. and Dave strode over four furlongs in in 50s.—Charlady and Judge’s Box did six in 1.18 1-5.— Prince Abbey ran six furlongs in 1.18 1-5, and Miss June four furlongs in 52s.—Queen Arch ran six furlongs in I.l6.—Royal Present ran the last three of his work in 49 2-ss.

At AVoodville yeterday the majority of backers went badly astray in at 1 least three of the events run, Black Mint, Blue Jay and Gleninnis all paying good double-figure dividends when they won, while Olympic’s second return, when beaten only a length by Clarinda, got very near them. Sleet, considring his recent public form, paid quite a nice price, the only other to go over the quarter-score being Degage. The hottest favourite of the day would seem to have been Ngawati, whose supporters got little more than half their money back after he had finished second in the Nursery Handicap. Speaking of dividends, it is .strange to have to go to a Sydney paper for public information as to the big dividend paid by Comic Song in the Stewards’ Handicap at Christchurch. One just to hand quotes it to the penny. There both bookmakers’ starting prices and machine dividends are quoted without any legislative lot or hindrance. The only embargo placed upon the press is with regard to the publication before the day of the pencillers’ odds on offer or taken in their ante-post operations. After all. it does not look as if J. M. Cameron’s horses would have a chance of winning at the coming A.R.C. fixture. Private cable advice received from him yesterdays says that he himself intends returning by the boat which. D.A’. and the firemen permitting. will leave Sydney on 18th inst. It is very doubtful, however, whether he will bring any of hTs horses with him. Of the diificulties in getting away with his team a Sydney writer last week said:—“When he contemplates sailing away from Australian shores these days, man may propose as much as he likes, but other agencies are apt to dispose. Mr. J. M. Cameron will testify to the truth of this. He has been anxious for some time to return to New Zealand, but transport difficulties have kept him here. Early this week, he thought ho had surmounted them, but now finds himself in the same old fix. One of his favourite steamers is out of action, owing to the modern complaint of having been declared black. The Maheno will bo too full when she sails on Friday to accommodate The Hawk and company. The Maunganui has room, but cannot convoy stock. She was recently on tho San FTancisco run, and by tho quarantine regulations a certain period must elapse after coming off the route before she is ‘clean’ for the convoyanee of stock, Cameron’s desire to get home has been increased by a cable message informing him of some of tho weights allotted in the Railway Handicap (of £l 100). six furlongs, to he run at Auckland on Boxing Day. In the Carrington Stakes, six furlongs, with a 6.7 minimum, to be run at Sydney Tattersail’s meeting. Tho Hawk was allotted 10. S. Tlie minimum in tho Railway Stakes is 7.0, and The Hawk has only 9.13.” Il is said Cameron is thinking seriously of standing for a Labour constituency next election to see if he cannot got things altered. Meantime, however, he voues “a nti-Red.”
