H.B. EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY meeting. The monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday in Napier. Present: Messrs G. F. Roach (chairman), J. Kirk, G. A. Maddison, R. Soundy, J. Wauchope, R. C. Wright, A. King. W. Oates. W. Cuthbertson, J. Clark Thomson and G. Crawshaw. Leave of absence was granted to Mf. G- McKay, M.P. FINANCIAL. The statement of the Board’s funds showing a credit of £3,815 0/1, was adopted. The statement of the liabilities showed a balance of assets over liabilities of £1,567 12/7. Accounts totalling £l6/556 14/4 were passed for payment. DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE. The Department wrote on various matters as follows:— That the Board used a private motor lorry to cart materials to a school when the railway could have been cheaper and more expeditiously used, and in future the railway should be used if cheaper. Authorising the painting of the root of the Mahora School. That the grant for the year ending March 31. 1926, for maintenance of buildings was £7.306. an increase of £167.— It was decided to ask the Department how the total was calculated. That the inspector of native schools would visit Mohaka this month to decide as to whether this school is to be converted into a native school. That the Director of Education (Mr. J. Oaughley) would visit Dannevirke next Monday and meet the school com. mittees and High School Board to discuss the proposed new junior high school. WAIPAWA SCHOOL SITE. The Waipawa School Committee wrote approving of the mew site .suggested by the Board and welcoming the suggestion to establish a junior high school. The committee asked that the question of erecting the new school be treated as urgent. It was decided that the proposal for the new site be placed before the Department, but that the preparations on plans fop new buildings be defined until after the Director of Education had visited Waipawa to discuss proposals. The director is to be asked to make an early visit. The Dannevirke School Committee forwarded an offer from the Danncvirks Borough Council for the use of two rooms for a clinic.—Offer referred to the Health Department.

An application from the Mangaorapa School Committee for extensions to the school was referred to the senior inspector and secretary when further particulars are received. The board decided that a dental clinic at Waipawa Mould Tender one unnecessary at Otane. Tire question of the clinic at Waipawa was referred to the Health Department. An application from the secretary of the Hastings Plunket Society for a school half-holiday on Wednesday. October 28, was refused. A letter Mas received from the Taradale School Committee strongly protesting against the discontinuance of treatment of Taradale pupils at the Napier dental clinic.

Th© Clive Grange School Committer is to be approached by the chairman and secretary in connection M’ith the application for a w’ater supply, and objection was taken against the manner in which the committee conducted the application in dealing with the department. It M-as decided to support the Napiei School’s resolution that the Direct™ of Education be written to asking him when the valuation of the technical school property may be made as pro raised by him on his recent visit t( Napier in conference M’ith the Napiei Borough Council. The following subsidies have beei approved by the department:—Wairoa £3 17/6, Napier £4 7/6, Paki Paki £6 5/-, Ormond £27 10/-, Clive Grange £5, Mangapapa £1 17/6, Ngatapa £l. Onga Onga £2O. SCHOOL COMMITTEES. The recommendations of the Finance Committee on school committee corres pondence were adopted as follows:— Fras?rtown; Improvements costing €2B 14/6 to the residence were approved. Ti Tree Point: A subsidy.of £4 7/ towards grading and draining the grounds Mas granted. Parkvale: It Mas decided to grant £1 3/- towards the cost of extern inr the boiler chimney fine and an ap plication for a subsidy for a telephone Mas declined. Eskdale and Bav View: The condi tions under M’hich Mr. McHardy wilt allow the use of his buildings was re ferred to the senior inspector for a r port, the secretary to have the poM-or to act if the report is favourable. Twyford; The sum of £5 14/6 is t be granted towards a permanent Mate supply for the residence tank. Mangateretere: An application for a grant for improvements to the schoo grounds wa s held up until part cuiars are acquired.
