Sir Chatties Fergusson had a quiet farewell on leaving Waterloo for Southampton. He was faro welled at. a luncheon at the Hotel Cecil. Sir James Allen, presiding, promised Sir Charles Fergusson a groat welcome in New Zealand as successor to Lord Jel licoe, who had been a great success. He hoped he would visit Australia, with which he had close connections-. Sir Charles Fergusson recalled vivid and pleasant memories of his early life in South Australia. He feared he had not many qualifications; but he was going to do his best. Ho paid a tribute to Now Zealand’s effort during the war and mentioned the New Zealand artillery in 1918 under his command. Ho expressed the opinion that the wartime spirit of co-opera-tion and self-sacrifice would furnish the only solution for the present bad economic conditions and unemployment. ." Sir Charles Fergusson .declared that a policy of give and take between; Britain and the dominions was an absolute necessity. He believed the next live years would show a vast improvement in the general situation in Britain and the dominions.
