CHAMPIONS LEAVE.

CYCLIST’S FOR AUSTRALIA. WARRNAMBOOL-MELBOURNE RACE. Christchurch, Oct. 1. D. Wright, of Reefton. and C. Bell, of Christchurch, left Christchurch last evening for Wellington, on their way to Australia. These two crack cyclists have been chosen to represent New Zealand in tha Warrnambool-to-Melbourne cycle road race. Wright secured fastest time in the Timaru-to-Cliristchurch race on Saturday, and Bell made the second fastest time.

Wright and Bell will join the vessel for Melbourne in Wellington to-day. B. Le Compte of Little River, the only other New Zealand entrant in the big race, will leave on Friday. Wright’s expenses have been guaranteen to him. Bell may be assisted by a grant from the North Canterbury Athletic and Cycling Union—he is taking the risk. Le Compte’s expenses will be found partly by public subscription. 801 l rode third in the Warrnambool race last year, and two years ago Wright was fifth.
