ADMONITORIAL.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —1 was not present when Mr. Hobbs delivered his now lamous permon and the only knowledge 1 have ot it has been gained through reading reports in the “Tribune.” In my opinion if Mr. Hobbs is satisfied that racing and card playing are evils he is surety right in denouncing them as such. Vvhy everyone should assume that the Vice-Regal party had been insulted by such a sermon is capable of an interpretation that 1 for one would hesitate to enlarge upon. . We older residents who have known Mr. Hobbs for so many years are well aware what a strong sense of duty he has and will understand that, feeling as he does about racing and gambling, that sermon had to be. by the way, 1 have not yet noticed that anyone has proved the incorrectness of the subject matter of the sermon, they only, lay stress on the heinousness of mentioning such things m the hearing of the Governor and suite. Now with reference to the synod’s “discovery,” I would take the opportunity of asserting that had the Key. John Hobbs been stationed in this district it would have been found out some time ago. 1 once heard one of our new dances described as “an appeal to sex.” Given that type of dance, lady as scantily clad as is now the fashion, add to that the young man of the type of Flip Flap or Flapdoodle (I forget his name) who states that a man must have his liquor, and I venture to state that in some cases a certain amount of abandon will result. I would like to emphasise the phrase—in some cases. Some of these new dances call for a considerable amount of clinching and it may. be possible that the resulting atmospheric condi tion may also intoxicate a few of the fair sex—Mr. Editor, please alter that to read a very few. The suggestion in to-night’s paper re the clergy controlling our dances is splendid. They should be clothed in some distinctive costume and any couple refusing to disengage on the command “Break” should be disqualified for life.—-1 am. etc., FAIR PLAY. Hastings, 1/10/21.
