Connecting Taupo

With Rotorua Railway JUNCTION AT PUTARURU. PROPOSED GO-MILE LINE. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, Sept. 11. The project for building a railway from Taupo to Putaruru, which has been repeated upon by a Royal Commission, has now reached a satisfactory stage as the result of negotiations between the Minister of Railways, the Railway Board and the Taupo Totara Timber Company. The last-named offered 19 miles of constructed railway to the board for £50,000, subject to the conservation of certain rights and after considerable discussion made a further announcement that it would raise no objection to the board building the proposed line if it could be shown that it would serve other timber interests in the district better than the company’s line. This concession is expected to go a long way towards disposing of the obstacles which nave held up the project for some years. The total cost of 40 miles of new line and relaying the existing 19 miles with 401 b. rails, would be i-Highly £300,000. Putaruru, the proposed junction for the Taupo line, is the stopping place for refreshments on the FranktonRotorua railway, half-way between Morrinsville and Rotorua. It is 10 miles from the Okoroire Hot Springs and 33 miles from Rotorua. T’ ( name means “Owl’s Hole.”
