OTANE.

(Own Correspondent). The public meeting of ratepayers and householders, held in the Town Hall on Tuesday night, was very well attended and considerable interest was displayed by the audience. The chairman of the retiring board, Mr J. N. Barrie, briefly explained the financial affairs of the board. Mr Bruce placed the position of the Town Hall and gas accounts in detail, and Mr Malenoir explained his position and his actions as a member of the Central Power Board. The principal discussion took place in connection with the Harbour Board rates, levied by the Patangata County Council. Mr J. J. Langridge, the district’s representative on the Harbour Board, strongly objected to the method employed by the council, and Mr R. W. White, the district representative on the Patangata County Council, defended the county’s actions. The various matters were thoroughly discussed and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair. Miss Pcnlington. temporary mistress, assumed duty at the Otane School on Monday morning.
