RIOTERS ROUTED.

ELEPHANT TO THE RESCUE. CROWD ATTACKS CIRCUS. Brisbane, July 18. A crowd in Townsville, which became annoyed at an increase of prices charged by a circus management, and the rowdy element led an attack on the office, which was on wheels. They started to push it towards the creek, apparently with the intention of running it into the water, but the circus manager had an unlooked-for reinforcement.

He hastened into the tent, and returned with the performing elephant. Then ensued a tug-of-war between the mighty four-footer and the angry crowd.

The elephant not only stopped the removal of the ticket-box, but also menaced the crowd. Trumpeting shrilly, he seemed to ask them if they wanted anv more trouble, and he was menacing them when the police arrived and restored order by removing the malcontents.

Many of the crowd went away, while others paid the extra money to see what other games the elephant knew.
