HASTINGS JERSEY CLUB.

COMMITTEE MEETING. The Hastings Jersey Club’s committee met last Saturday, Mr C. F. Goodrick in the chair. Cojmmunicationjs from the Dannevirfie, Woodville and Wairarapa Jersey Clubs, re forming a sub-association, were referred to the incoming committee to deal with. The New Zealand Jersey Breeders Association wrote regarding the visit of their official 1 - demonstrator, and it was decided to hold the meeting on the Hastings racecourse, if available, at 1 p.m., on May sth, members to provide refreshments.

ANNUAL AIEETING.

The annual meeting of the club was held on Saturday, a fairly large number of members being present. The following report was submitted by the executive: —“Since the inception of the Jersey Club, we claim to have dome good work, having held two demonstrations during-the year—one at Air G. Milligan’s and one at Air S. G, Guthrie’s. Both these gentlemen gave lectures on the best points of a dairy cow from a Jersey point of view, in which much interest was taken. Mr W. 1 T. and z Mr G. Alilligan each gave a cup ior competition in the jersey classes at the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Show, and the Jersey Club gave prizes for a young persons’ judging competition in yearling heifers. The papers sent m by the competitors were very good and were highly spoken of by the judge. The club also got a class included in the Autumn Show for grade jersey heifer classes, which brought 33 entries. On the whole the entries were a very fine lot of calves, showing that the owners had bestowed considerable care and trouble to bring up good beasts in order to further interest \n this class, clearly indicating that dairy farmers were determined to improve the class of dairy cattle in use. The club nominated four of its members for election on the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society’s committee, Mr Thompson being successful. The club also took an active interest in obtaining entiles for the Spring Show_ one result being a good entry in the Jersey classes, in which much interest w/as taken by the public. The club, through the A. and P. Association, prevailed on the judge,- Mr F, Ranslord, to give a lecture on Jersey cattle, his address being a very able and instructive exposition on the qualities of a dairy cow from a Jersey breeder’s point of view. It is the wish of the club that something should be done in the coming year to assist small dairy nirmers to obtain purebred registered bulls for their own use, and tne committee also trusts that the club will nominate more members as candidates lor the committee oi the A. and P. society, whereby they will be studying their own, as well as the Society’s, welfare . The chairman and secretary have decided to resign and the thanKs or tne ciub are due to these gentlemen, tor the interest they have taken in promoting the Jersey breed in this district. The club took steps to form a sub-association of Jersey clubs, consisting of Hastings, Daimevirke, Woodville and Wairarapa. Communications m this regard had not reached finality and we nope *the new committee will bring matters to a successful issue, which wound be of considerable benefit to the breed and breeders. We are also looking forward to a visit from the Jersey Association’s official demonstrator. Air H. B. Watson, who was due to arrive on Alay sth. During the year 42 members were electel, 36 of whom, have paid their subscriptions.” The . balance sheet showed a satisfactory credit. The report and balance sheet were adopted. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the committee for its work, the mover (Mr Honeybun) saying that the club had fully justified its existence, specially mentioning the grade Jersey heifer class at the last Autumn Show. Mr E. Al. Langley was thanked for his gift of prize money for this class. The old committee, viz., Messrs C. F Goodrick, G. Milligan. A. Struthers, j’ A Martin, D. O. Smith, C. H. Thompson and AV. W. Smart were reelected for the ensuing year. It was decided that the members present meet next Saturday, at 2 p.m., to make final arrangements for Air Watson’s visit.
