HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

The Hastings Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison) presiding. Cr. L. W. Fowler, B. M Cohr R. Hay, Simmonds, F. A. Garry. F. W. Cook. N. H. Beatson, and McKee were also present. COR R ESPONDENC E.

The Bank of New Zealand explained that its offer regarding the electrical man was to endeavour to place the £20,000 for a commission of 1 per cent, jhe debentures would require to be io r £lOO each principal and interest to lie paid'Ut any branch of the Bank of New Zealand, in New Zealand, free of exchange to th© holder. The Labourers’ Union thanked the Council for allowing the Borough Council labourers to attend the Drivers’ Union picnic.—Received. The Hawke’s Bay County Council, r© main highway in Hawke’s Bay, wrote that the Council’s letter urging that the road should be niade through Hastings would be considered at the meeting of February 11th and it desired to be advised if. in the event of l.h© main road going through Hastinn. <t, was the Council’s intention to lay ft down in bitumen.—To be informed diat work is now in progress. The Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association, writing regarding the Technical acnool and the us© of Nelson Park, act vised that the Association would in.erview the director of the Technical College on the matter of affiliation. The Mayor said the Council had no lUi'isdiction over other associations and the Cricket Association would be written to.

The Postmaster advised that the rewiring of the new boxes used for ac•ommodating th© taxi-stand telephone viands would, be carried out free of •barge.—Received. The Hawera Borough Council in reply to Council’s request for information regarding traffic domes, said that the copy of the design for their reini meed concrete dome belonged to Mr. Starrock, borough engineer, who was also in private practice, and in this apacity had supplied plans of the dome co several towns for a fee of three guineas. Th© Council, should communicate with him.—Received.

The licensee Hastings Hotel (Mr. W. E. Hill) wrote that th© hotel was now using about double the candlepower used previous to the alterations, and the maximum demand should be much less than it was at present, and apply for refund of overcharge on previous accounts.—Referred to town clerk and electrical engineer. The Mayor said he wanted t© see the matter investigated, when Mr. Hill would be dealt with in a fair manner.

Westerman and Co., in reply to the Council’s letter, said the.v anticipated their building programme would enable all encroachments to b© removed by .he end of the present year, if not ■ia: tier.

Th© Mayor said that there was nothing very definite in the letter, and referred to the conditions under which the Council granted previous extensions to the firm. Messrs ae Pehchcl ami McLeod had given a donation of £l5O to the Mothers’ Rest on condition that the encroachment should be soon removed. H e thought Westerman and Co. should be given a definite date by •vhicli th© encroachment should be re moved, in order that th© Council could complete th© footpath leading to the Mothers’ Rest. He moved, “That Messrs Westerman and Co. be advised that the. encroachment must be removed by the Ist of May, otherwise the Council would have to take action.’’

(_ r. Fowler seconded. He recognised that Messrs Westerman and Co. had put up a very fine building, but the Council had been very generous to them. In© motion was carried.

The Railway Department wrote in reference to the Frederick street hedge near the railway crossing requiring to be trimmed down from 4ft to sft. and it was decided to notify propertyowners in reference to the matter. GENERAL.

The Mayor moved “That a ladies’ lavatory be erected at the Council’s cemetery, and the matter of plans and .siiecihcations. and locality, b© referred io the Reserves Committee for a report. Fowler, th© Mayor said the borough inspector would refioit to next meeting on th© number of residences which wer© not connected with sewerage in streets having the sewerage and water laid on. The tender of Messrs C. A. Cook and Co., £l3B 10s. was accepted for th© rewiring of the Assembly Hall. Messrs Loach and Price. £l4O. were the only other tenderers-
