ITEMS OF INTEREST.

The Borough Engineer has been instructed to carry out an experiment with bituloid for dust prevention on a block in Warren street between Hepetaunga and Queen streets, at an estimated cost of £lO.

The Hastings Borough Council has granted permission to the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers Association to erect a shed for storing case timber, on the following conditions ; — Dimensions; 20ft x 10ft; iron roof, iron back and sides, open front. Distance from St. Aubyn street 60ft, and over 40ft from any other building. That the Associa. tion undertake to dismantle the building required by the Council—such condition to be embodied in a deed should the property be sold. Borough by-laws for this class of building to be complied with.

Owing to the continued hot, dry weather a number of trees on the streets have died. , The slot gas meters in Cornwall Park have been installed and are being used by the public. One hundred and forty-two pennies were paid in for the thre weeks to the 19ht January. The caretaker has been instructed to have a notice board erected stating that hot water may be obtained by means of depositing one penny in the slot. Whilst on his holidays the caretaker of reserves (Mr W. W. Adams) inspected the children’s playing apparatus at Wanganui, and has submitted a. list to the Reserves Committee with prices. The Reserves, Committee is considering the matter. The caretaker of Reserves ha s been authorised to obtain prices for the erection of a gate at the back entrance to the Women’s Rest building, to prevent “drunks” and other undesirable persons from making use of the right-of-way. A special meeting of the Reserves Committee is to be held to consider the question of the proposed new park at Hastings West Mr Ebbet and representatives of the Hastings West Progressive Society to be asked to attend the meeting. The Reserves caretaker has been in tructed to prepare a plan of the Uy out of the Napier Park extension and to show proposals in regard to the fu. ture development of the whole of this park. . Cr. Fowler asked last mghb when the committee was going,to report on the slaughtering contract. The Maycrf- replied that Dr. Reakes would visit Hastings shortly, when the matter would dealt with. At a special meeting of the Council last evening, a resolution closing part of Haig street, formerly part of Terrace road, was carried. A resolution making by-law No 12 was also carried with exception of the clause relating to permission being given for the holding of shops, the Council being substi. tuted for the Mayor in an amendment moved by Cr. Fowler, who contended that they might have a Mayor in future who would override the Council in granting permission in such matters. At last night’s Council meeting Cr. Garry suggested that in conjunction with the improvements to Nelson Park a scheme of town planning be devised and that the approaches to the proposed new railway station be included. The Mayor said that he would, bring the last matter under the notice of Mr Jeffreys when he visited Hastings next day. He also mentioned that tho beautifying of Nelson Park was already under consideration. Sneaking of the work now being done in Karamu road in regard to the mixing of the bitumen the Mayor, renlyimz to Cr Fowler said that the mixer being used now was not giving satisfaction and the engineer was instructed to renort on a better method. Cr Cohr said the men wore making a good ioh of tho work, and it did not matter if it was going to cost a little more.
