His Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) will leave Auckland on Tuesday next, arriving in Hastings on Wednesday, when he will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs H. M. Campbell during his stay in the district. His Excellency will attend the break-up ceremonies at lona College, Havelock North, and he will assist at a similar function at Woodford House, where the Hon. Myrtle and the Hon. Nora Jellicoe are attending school. On Sunday, December 16th, he will unveil the war memorial at Taradale, and, accompanied by his two daughters, he will leave on his return to Auckland on December 18th. His Excellency celebrated his 64th birthday yesterday and spent a quiet day at Government House. Mrs M. Lane left Hastings this morning on a visit to Dannevirke. Mr. T. Dix, overseer to the Napier Borough Council, has been appointed to a similar position to the Cambridge Borough Council. The father of Signor S. Truda, of Napier, Signor Pasquale, died at Fraumtala, Italy, recently, at the age of 85 yearst Mr Patrick Fahey, one of the few re maining pioneers of the district, died recently at St. Bathans, where he had resided for the last 55 years. Mr. E. C. Robieson, of Wellington, who has been on a holiday visit to North Auckland, arrived in Napier lasi evening. He leaves to-morrow morn) ing for Wellington. The following new members were elected at to-day’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society; Messrs W. V, Chambers, Otane, and W, S. Holland, Napier. A respected resident , of Tauranga. Mrs J. T. Hanaly, died at Gate Pa, oil Monday night in the 77th year of her ag®. Deceased was born near Wigton, Cumberland. Our Waipukmrau correspondent reports that the death occurred at Waipukurau yesterday of Mrs. C. Crellin after a protracted illness. The interment will take place at Taumaranui. Tlie Acting-Prime Minister, Sir Francis Bell, left Wellington for Auckland to-day. He will confer, with the Administrator of Samoa on matters associated with the administration of the mandated territory. Mr. A. L. Robertson, inspector of machinery for the Auckland Harbour Board, has been compelled to resign owing to ilbhealth, after having occupied the position for only three months. His place has been taken by Mr. D. Penman.

Monsieur de Cremiers, Secretary oi the French Shipping Line, the Messageries Maritimes, is visiting Auckland Mr S. G. Raymond, K.C. has returned to Christchurch after an absence oi some years. He has been on a trip to Great Britain and the Continent foi health reasons.

The Rev. and Mrs J. Hay, who leave on Monday next for Cambridge, were farewelled by the congregation of the Port Ahuriri Church at the Wilson Hall, Port Ahuriri, on Wednesday evening. Mr. Hay was presented with a wallet of notes and Mrs Hay with a beautiful bowl.

Word was received on Wednesday ol th© death in Invercargill of Arthur Walter Goldsmith, onlv son of Mrs Blight, of Smithfield. He was born in Wanganui, and left with the forces, serving on Gallipoli, where he was badly wounded. A wife and five small children are left to mourn their sad loss.

From information received from a reliable source it is unlikely the Minister for Justice (the Hon. C. J. Parr) will be back from Australia in sufficient time to visit this part of Hawke’s Bay before Christmas. The. Hon. W. Nosworthy. Minister of Agriculture, and the Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister for Internal Affairs, are expected to arrive in Napier on Wednesday next. On the occasion of the birthday of Queen Alexandra on December Ist, the Governor-General sent a message to His Majesty on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand. His Excellency has received the following reply : —“Please accept grateful thanks for kind birthday greeting and assure the Government and people of New Zealand how greatly I appreciate the kind thoughts of me.—Alexandra.”

The many Hawke’s Bay friends of Nurse M. Martin, of Waipawa. will regret to hear that she has giver up her profession. Nurse Martin is the fortunate possessor of a big youthful mother heart and a z fine capable sporting instinct which made her a great favourite wherever she went. It is believed that the spare time of the nrivate life she is settling down to is to be spent toward the radium appeal.

Private advice has been received from Dunedin of the death of Mis Ellen Cassells, widow of the late Sorgeant Cas sells, of the Dunedin Police Force ami mother of Superintendent John Cassells, of Canterbury police district. Bon at Kyneton, near Melbourne, Australia. 88 years ago, Mrs Cassells came to tin Dominion with her husband m the ’six ties. They landed fit Dunedin, when her husband was with the first detach ment of police to arrive in Dunedin fron Australia under St. John Branigan. Mrs Cassells is surviv'd by her son, Superin tendeent Cassells, and two daughters fine of whom lives in Dunedin, the other in Christchurch.

In view of his impending departure for Hay elock North, where he will tak< charge of the Heretaunga Boys ’ Schoo) the Rev J. G. Castle, of the staff of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, was tendered a farewell social. The rector, Mr J. Murray, M.A., on behalf of the members of the staff, asked his acceptance of a set of volumes as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by his former fellow-teachers. Mr Castle was also met by members of the Gordon Club, with which he has been associateo ut the school. J. Tremewan. captain, on behalf of the club, presented the departing gentleman with a solid silver ink-stana.
