Dr. and Mrs Lindo Ferguson, of Dunedin, were passengers from Sydney on Monday. A Paris cable announces the death of MJ, Maurice Barres, the distinguished literateur and Nationalist politician, at the age of 61. Mr. T, M. Lawlor, of Hastings, who has been indisposed intends leaving on an extended visit to Tauranga for the benefit of his health. Miss Grace Hicks, who has been the guest of Mrs. E. M. Marshall, in Hastings, for some weeks, left for her home at Cambridge, Waikato, this morning. Mrs. C. Shattky and her daughter, Miss R. Shattky, left Hastings this morning en route for Tasmania, where they will visit Hobart and Launceston, in the course of a holiday tour. Mr. and Mrs J. H. P. Strang, who have been absent from Palmerston North for nearly eighteen months on a visit to England, have returned to the Dominion. Mr. H. Guthrie-Smith, of Tutira, the well-known author of several works dealing with New Zealand bird life, is at present in the Manapouri district collecting photographs and material for another book. At a meeting of members of the Southland Police Force, held in Invercargill, it was decided to present Superintendent Marsack, of Dunedin, with a silver tea and coffee service, on the occasion of his retirement. Out of 27 applications, Mr. Thomas Hay has been appointed assistant engineer to the Thames Borough Council. He is at present on the staff of the Gisborne borough, where he has been four years. Mr. Hay served four years at the war.

Mr. Charles Berkerley, senior touring manager for J. C. Williamson, Ltd., is in Hastings making preliminary arrangements for the appearance next Thursday of the New Musical Comedy Company in “The Cabaret Girl” and “Kissing Time.”

The Rev. H. O. Townsend Hanby (son of the late Mr. O. W. Hanby, for many years editor of the “Nelson Mail”), at present organising secretary of the Education Board of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, has been appointed vicar of Woolston, in succession to the Rev. F. Dunnage, who is about to spend a year in England.

Mr Rogers, the meter inspector of the Hastings municipal electrical department, who is in the Napier Hospital suffering from a compound fracture of the right leg, sustained while cycling in Kararnu road last Sun.lay, is progressing as well as can be expected, it was proposed to set the leg yesterday, but this could not be proceeded with until the swelling had been further reduced.

An engagement of interest is that announced between Miss Margaret Thorp and Mr. Arthur Watts,* both well known in Australia and New Zealand,- as well as in Europe for their voluntary war relief work for the Society of Friends. Mr. Watts has given five years’ service since the war in reconstruction work in France, Poland, and Russia. Miss Thorp, who toured New Zealand about eighteen months ago, in the interests of the Russian. Famine Relief Fund, is in charge of the welfare work at Anthony Hordern’s, Sydney.

When Viscount Leverhulme arrives in Auckland on December 27th, he will be met by Mr. W. H. Trevanne, manager of Lever Bros. (N.Z.) Ltd., who has just completed a quarter of a century’s service with the firm, during which time he has put up something of a reputation as a globe-trotter. Two years he spent in Switzerland, thre« in Australia, two in Germany, and also a considerable time in France, Belgium. Holland, America, Canada, and South Africa, completing his 25 years’ record in this farthest portion of the British Empire. Needless to say he has a very thorough knowledge of the ramifications of the firm in practically every corner of the world. He started as an office boy with Lever Brothers, and has been through every department of th" business, so that he is fully acquainted with all the processes.
