CARNIVAL ART UNION.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In reply to “Hopeful’s” letter in last evening’s “Tribune,” may I say “Give our business men a chance!” Throughout the year the majority pf them willingly and cheerfully subscribed to every public function. The success of the Carnival itself depends almost entirely on their untiring efforts for weeks beforehand. Surely we, the public, are not going to begrudge them the only “shopping stunt” they have brought forward whereby they may stimulate business during Carnival Week. “Hopeful” supposes there is nothing for it but to make all purchases before or after Shopping Week, in, order to avoid receiving a one penny art union ticket for every shilling spent. I am for buying a full month’s supplies next week! If we all do this I guess instead of their being only one fly in the ointment, there will be so many flies that you won’t even be able to locate the ointment at all. The very name “Jubilee Carnival” has such a joyful sound that we do not want to smother it with a wet blanket.—l am, etc., ANOTHER HOPEFUL. (Hopeful of winning that £5O Art Union Prize). Hastings, 13/10/23. (To the Editor.) Sir, —There is an advertisement in this (Friday) evening’s “Tribune,” presumably from the Carnival Committee which I consider most unfair to some shopkeepers. The advertisement says “Buv from traders who display art union window streamers.” Now, there are shopkeepers in Hastings who are strongly opposed to art unions on principle, believing them to be a form of gambling. These shopkeepers, and I am one of them, have •refused to use these art union books, and are they to suffer because of their principles, seeing that the public are practically advised by the Carnival Committee not to shop with them. That committee, in issuing such an advertisement, seems to me to be acting in a most unfair manner to these shopkeepers. I hope that other shopkeepers, who are opposed to this form of gambling. will strongly protest against it. Surely the Carnival- could be run successfully without an art union.—l am, etc., CONSISTENT.
