HAYNE FOUND GUILTY.
RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY. FEMALE ACCUSED ACQUITTED. Dunedin, Aug. 7. At the Supreme Court, before Mr Justice Sim, James Reynolds Hayne and Elizabeth Simpson Inglis appeared on charges of procuring abortion on a young woman on May 19. The accused were represented by Messrs A. C. Hanlon and B. S. Irwin, and Mr F. 11. Adams appeared fpr the Crown. The accused pleaded not guilty. An order was made fbr the non-publica-tion of the names of the principal female witness. The evidence was on the lines of that given in the lower court.
The jury, after a retirement of 25 minutes returned a verdict of guilty In the case of the male accused with a recommendation to mercy, and nut guilty against Inglis. The Judge deferred passing sentence until to-mor-row morning. |
