EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawke’s Bay Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs J. Clark Thomson (chairman), R. G. McKay. G. W. Venables. W. Cuthbertson, A. King, and A. W. Hamilton. School committee correspondence was dealt with as follows: — Kaiti: Application for grant towards the cost of water rates on the school and for the supply of a dividing curtain in the infant classroom was deferred till the next meeting. Hastings West: Application is to be renewed to the department for additions to the school. Nelson Park : The action of the secretary m having the windows of the school altered to improve the ventilation was endorsed. The Karaka: The question of purchasing three acres for the extension of the school site was deferred till the next meeting. Moieo: Ihe work of repairing the western hall of the school was. ordered to be gone on with. Maharuhara: vine carrying out of additions and alterations to the school was referred to the architect for a report for next meeting. Mahora: The work of replacing the spouting at the school is to be carneu •out.

Napier Central; The matter of laying out the playground and asphalting it was referred to the architect for a report.

Clive: Application is to be made to the department lor an additional room at the teacher s residence. It was decided to havs other repairs proceeded with. The request that a partition be placed In the largest room at the school was held over. Umakere; The senior inspector was requested to recommend to the Board as to the need tor additions to the school.

Unga Onga: The Board decided to advise the committee that the question of replacing long desks with dual desks was to be dealt with by the Board at its May meeting. PATANGATA SCHOOL. A deputation comprising Messrs August and bhauple waited on the Board, and presented a petition from the residents of the Patangata district asking that the school at Patangata be reopened. The request was referred to, the secretary with power to open the school if he found that the attendance would be sufficient. PROPOSED TURIROA SCHOOL. The establishment of a school at Turiroa was urged by Messrs Powdreh and Lane, a deputation representing the Turiroa Settlers’ Association. Mr. Powdrell stated that he was prepared to find the money for / the school if the Board or Department was prepared to pay the current rate of interest. The Board decided to urge upon the Department the necessity of constructing a school at Turiroa immediately, and to point out that the question of conveying the children to Wairoa by launch was out of the question. GENERAL. The establishment of a school at Raukawa was approved. The secretary was authorised to acquire a new site which had been selected for a school at Puketapu. The question of erecting separate schools at Petane and Eskdale was deferred till next meeting. Accounts amounting to £11,495 15s were passed for payment.
