A general protest against the Government’s intention to protect stoats, weasels and hawks, on account of the rabbit nuisance, is being made by acclimatisation societies throughout New Zealand. Letters of protest were received by the Auckland Aeclimatistl m Society last week from similar bodies nt Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Fielding and Opotiki. The Dircctor-Gen-eral of Agriculture notified the Auckland Society that careful consideration nas being given to the protests. Recently a deputation from the NewZealand Returned Soldiers’ Association waited on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Lands, in Wellington, with a request that the Government should supply soldier settlers with free trees for the purpose of shelter belts. A letter has now been received by the secretary of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association from the Minister of Lands, stating that arrangements have been made with the Forestry Department for the supply of a limited number of trees for soldier settlers, and that applications should be forwarded to the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
