COUNCIL METHODS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Complaint is surely reasonable I in reference to the methods adopted by I uiie Council in the repair of the KaI ramu road, which seems an unduly protracted operation I For months past shingle and other . material has been dumped oft to each side of Ellison road and St. Aubyn street, greatly to the danger of the public. At night time no lights are placed to indicate the presence of these obvious dangerous obstructions, and often, to avoid collision with motor cars, cyclists are forced to hastily dismount, otherwise serious accidents would be the outcome. Why is it necessary to use the roads, only leaving space fOf one vehicle to pass, when a few chains away the Council have a portion of the Nelson Cricket Ground Ke serve, at present only growing noxious weeds? ' Surely all matrial for road repair could be carted there, and used as required. If a tradesman places a box on a public footpath ho is soon asked to remove the obstruction. Why should not the .same -vigifetnce be extended to road obstructions? In one instansce we see a Silent Inspector placed to prevent accident#;- and in another the Council being guilty by slack, methods, of increasing preventible harm, to huk man life. Hoping a word in season may have desirable results.—l am, etc. OBSEKVEIR. Hastings, 14/3/23.
