SWIMMING.

RECORDS BROKEN

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

In winning the 100 yards Hawke’s Bay provincial championship in 62 1-5 seconds at the Napier Club’s carnival in the Municipal Baths last evening, C. Lound broke the Dominion intermediate record by three-fifths of a second, rfind got within one-fifth of the time (62secs) in which J. Enwright (Auckland) won the 100 yards Dominion championship at Timaru recently and 2 1-5 seconds of E. G. L. Patterson’s unbeaten Dominion record of 60 seconds dead. Lound swam a beautiful race last evening, and seemed to be going just as strongly over the last length as he did over the first. One watch clocked Lound to do 61 4-5 seconds. A. Adamson (Pirates), who has been swimming well this season, was unlucky in meeting with such improved stamina on the part of Lound. At the Harris carnival he covered the hundred in 74 seconds, and later cut nine seconds off this when competing against Enwright. Now he has got down to about 63 3-5 seconds.

All the competitors got away to a beautiful start, but at the first turn Lound was a foot in front of the rest. He maintained his lead over the second lap, and turned for home a foot in front. Then Adamson appeared to be overhauling him, but Lound clapped on the speed, and, drawing away, won a great race by a yard. H. Colbert (Hastings Street School) won the schoolboys’ 150 yards championship by a narrow margin from Tronson (Boys’ High School). The 100 yards schoolgirls’ championship was an easy thing for Miss T. Lynch (Convent), who, in covering the distance in 85 1-5 seconds, broke the provincial record established by Miss Q. Nuttall in 1918 by eight seconds, and bettered the standard time by 27 4-5 seconds. Owing to the cold snap in the air. the attendance was only fair.
