Dominions' Urgent Needs

MEN, MONEY, AND MARKETS. ALL AVAILABLE IN BRITAIN. (By Cable.—Press Association.— Copyright.! (Received 7, 12.15 p.m.) London, March 6. Coionfel L. C. M. S. Amery, presiding at Major Belcher’s lecture on tl>e Dgminions’ representation at the Empire Exhibition said that what the Dominions required most fere men. money and markets. They would get the best people in the world from Britain, including women and children. Britain lent the cheapest money in the world, and provided the best markets. These three combined would be the greatest factors in th© future development of th© Dominions. Their collective effect would elevate the Domniions to an important national status. Britain’s clearest line of policy in the future was Imperial preference in the broadest and most comprehensive sense. Sir Edward Lucas, supporting the vote of thanks at Major Belcher’s lecture. said Colonel Amery was the first imperial statesman to realise that migration meant, not emigration, but readjustment of Empire population. Sir A. H. Ashbolt predicted that Colonel Aimery’s Empire Settlement Act, also that the work of the Overseas Settlement Committee would become historical.

Major Belcher dealt seriatim with the dominions. He described each eulogisticfelly. He emphasised New Zealand’s scenery.; dairying and meat industries. As illustrating. New Zealand’s reputation for meat, he stated that immensely more Canterbury lamb was sold in England than ever came from New Zealand. He described Australia’s irrigation schemes as amongst the greOftest in the world. It is stated on reliable authority that Mr Bonar Law does not regard election pledges referring to non-interference with the tariff as precluding the Government from, materially increasing preference to the Dominions, even to the extent of completely removing the duties where preference now exists.— (A. and N.Z.)
