H.B. RIVERS BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board met to-day, Air. Kennedy presiding. The overseer reported that in connection with the Raupere bank from Fernhill to Pakowhai, that a portion had been raised and strengthened and sown with grass seed and fenced, and that seven crossings had been raised, regraded, and metalled. The cost of the work was £331 3/. English’s crossing at Papakura had been raised and metalled. An erosian had taken place below Millar’s bend in the Tuki Tuki, th© bank having been washed out for a distance of five chains and left perpenlisular. Tho cost of erection of protection works was £2OO, Regarding the erosion of Air. Wellwood’s land, the overseer reported that he had inspected the banks of the river along Air, Wellwood’s property. He found on three diffei'ent places where erosion had occurred that the water race was leading directly over the broken portion of the river banks. In Hood time the water race had a tendency to dislodge the bank and cause an enormous amount of gravel to slip. At the spot where the erosion had taken place it will take a groyne of 20 chains in length at a cost of £l5 per chain. He would not recommend a groyne at the spot whore the erosion had occurerd this time, as the water m flood time might get behind the work, but to start the work about half a mile further up the river. In connection with the erection of a stop-bank at Moteo. it was reported that the owner of the land objected to the erection of the bank on the proposed line.

The chairman and Alessrs W. J. Jarvis and 11. R. Clark were appointed •* sub-committee to interview the natives at Moteo, and ask their reasons objecting to the erection of a stop-bank at Aloteo.

The overseer was instructed to report further regarding the erection of a stop-bank on the north side of the Ngaruroro, and it was decided to ask tho settlers to clear tho willows between the bank and the river.

Regarding the erosion in Air Wellwood’s property it was decided to go ahead with the erection of protective work when the weather permits it. Accounts amounting to £845 15s tid were passed for payment.
