N.Z. BEAT AUSTRALIA. IN TEST MATCH. Palmerston N., Sept. 27. The hockey test between _\ew Zealand and Australia was played to-day in showery weather and the ground was slippery. The 1500 spectators were provideu with a good exposition considering tue conditions. New Zealand had the better of the play in the hrst hair. The Australians were unable to judge the pace of the ball. Their stick wora. was good, but their defence was weak, except in the case of Flockart in goal, who saved many hot shots. At hair time New Zealand had scored three goals to Australia's nil. The scorers were Watts. Heaphy and Bell, in the second half Australia improved iu form and had rather the better of the game. Their defence strengthened and their attack had more finish. Play became fast and interesting and goals were scored iu rapid succession. For Australia Seaman (3) and Craig scored and for New Zealand Watchman and Heaphy found the net. the game ending: New Zealand 5, Australia 4. Ou the whole New Zealand were lucky to w in.
