WAIPUKURAU.

(Own Correspondent.) A public meeting will l>e held in the Social Hall oi the 1 übuc Library on Thursday evening, 28th inst., at 7.30 p.m., lor the purpose of discussing and selecting some iorm of entertainment in conjunction with the drawing of the band’s art union on December 14th next. A good attendance of the public is anticipated. This will show bandsmen that residents are interested in the welfare of their band. The band's operations extend right through the year and visits several times tne public hospital ami the sanatorium. At both places they are eagerly looked forward to and afford great pleasure to the initiates. The forming of a citizens’ committee at the public meeting will be of great assistance to the band. A large number of railwaymen from all brunches oi tne service met in the waiting room on Monday evening to farewell Air. J. Dobson (porter), who has resigned from the service and is leaving on the 28th inst., with his wife and family, lor Brisbane, where their future home will be. During the two >ears which Mr. Dobson has been on the staff of the Waipukurau station, he has won the friendship of ail, and great regret is felt that he is leaving, fhe occasion was not allowed to pass without presenting him with some memento oi his fellow workers’ regards towards him. 1 his took the form of a splendid silver Waltham watch and case. Mr. T. Costello (guard), in making the presentation, said how sorry they were to lose the services of such a good public servant, his departure was a distinct loss to the service. He wished him and his wife and family good health, happiness and prosperity in his future home. Messrs. Noedl, Smales, Bassett, Creed, Hutchinson, A. Green, Borthwick and others also spoke of the happy comradeship that has existed at all times with Mr. Dobson. Mr. Dobson, responding, stated that he was sorry to leave them, he had no idea that he was so well thought of by his fellowworkers, hut. however, if it was so, it as as great a recompense as he or any other man could look forward to, the good fellowship uf his intimate acquaintances and friends. The usual weekly meeting of St. Andrew’s Literary and Debating Society was held on Saturday evening, there being a large attendance. The Burns lecture, given by Rev. Fish, proved to be a splendid one throughout, and the audience gained a new conception of the genius of Scotland’s national bard. Community singing was indulged in during the evening, and several musical item* were also contributed. The next meeting of the society will take the form of a social, when the evening will be devoted to musical and elocutionary items, gamesi etc. At a general meeting held to discuss the question of bowls being played on Sunday or otherwise, it was finally decided, by 16 to 11. that those wishing to play on Sundays should be allowed to providing no matches be played on those days. Mr. T. Given presided at tho meeting. On Saturday night Mr. Wesley ' Richards lectured to a full house at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Spiritism. Mr. I Richards showed himself to be a very arresting speaker .and his interesting I lecture was listened to with close at- 1 tention. On Sunday night, at the 1 Town Hall, Mr. Richards gave an address on the “Second Coming of ( Christ” in view of the present unfolding of prophecy, and was again lis- 1 toned to with great interest. ( The local Rugby team of the High ]. School journeyed to Dannevirke on j. Saturday to play Woodville High School and won easily by 76 points to t, 3. Tries were scored by Reidy (4), [ Davidson (5), Butler (4), Petherick, y King, Gurney and Jourdain (2). 0 Eleven of these were converted. )
