ANNUAL SPORTS.

DISTRICT RETURNED SOLDIERS. - •- ■ 4. (I’aradale correspondent). Despite an unpromising morning on Saturday the annual sports were held at Taradale Park in ideal weather. During the early morning rain sot in but by nine o’clock the clouds had rolled away and the suu shone out in all its glory. There was a record attendance oi spectators, many viaitora coming from Napier and Hastings. The meeting was a great success irom every point of view, and owing to the excellent arrangements and a carefully selected programme of events to suit all classes, everything passed as merrily as marriage bells. 'Hie coattuitlee consistin g of Messrs A. W. nowe C. J. Jlanley, T. ochares. .B. Leadbeater. A. Golding, R. Badley. A. Wothe'rspoon, F. O’Connor (treaaurer) and W. G. Horstield (secretary) are deserving of great praise tor the untiring way in which they have laboured lor several weeks past to ensure their patrons of a good day’s sport, and the meeting reflects great credit upon their organisation. The Tariu dale Returned Soldiers have the honour ol being the first iu New Zealand to hold a sports meeting, and the reward oi their efforts lor tiiesr last meeting should be most encouraging for other districts to follow suit. Ther were large nominations for practically every event; in the toot and bioycle races there were several close finishes and good times put up. These event* were run under the rules of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union. The most successful competitor was Mr A. J. Lansdown, who won a solid *ll- j ver cup lor scoring most points in the whole of the athletic events. He proved himself to be a runner of high merit. The handicapeprs. Messrs. J. Johnson and C. Price, gave every batisiaction. also Mr. P. Dolbie, who acted as starter. Messrs. P. Bishop and W. W. Brooks were the official timekeepers. Great thanks are due to the 3rd Battalion, Wellington Regiment Band, who gave their services tree. Their selections greatly enlivened the proceedings. A. novel side attraction, causing much competition and tun. was the Baby Show. The leaping events were particularly good, causing great attention.
