Horse doping continues the most urgent problem of the French turf. The Societe d’Encouragement is investigating, and there is an increasing number of cases, including charges against a trainer of first-class reputation. Stewards on all courses select horses at random and take samples of their saiftva pfter a race, which is tested by Professor Kaufmann, of the Veterinary College, Hefort. Trainers allege that this is unfair as they have no means of checking Professor Kaufmann’s methods for detecting dope. Meanwhile, a well-known flat-race trainer is bringing an action against the Societe d’Encouragement, claiming heavy damages, on the ground that his license as a trainer was suspended on the grounds of doping.—(A. and N.Z.)
