H.B. FRUITGROWERS’ ASSOCIATION.
GENERAL MEETING. A general meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association was held last night in Hastings, Mr. A. M. Robertson presiding over an attendance of 44 memebrs. A resolution was carried assigning to Messrs. A. M. Robertson. R. Paynter, J. H. Milne, J. P. Boyle, S. H. Baker, and S. Masters, who are guaranteeing the overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand, a mortgage over the association’s property in St. Aubyn street witK a view to building offices and stores. The president announced that arrangements had now been made for the supply of white pine fruit case timber, and he asked members to notify the secretary of their requirements. Mr. W. T. Goodwin. Assistant Director of Horticulture, gave an address on “Tlie handling of fruit, from tree to market.” In the course of a most instructive discourse he emphasised the necessity of neatness in the get-up of cases of fruit for the market, stressing more particularly the need of uniformity in the branding of cases. In order to assist buyers in recognising as quickly as possible the variety of fruit of which they are in search he urged that the brands in every instance be placed in a similar position on each case. Mr. Goodwin was asked to procure a report on the different grading machines in use through the Nelson district. At the conclusion of his lecture Mr. Goodwin was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and the hope was expressed that he would visit the district often, so as to familiarise himself with local conditions.
