" NOTES. (By “Trenton..”) Nominations for the Hawke’s Bay J.C. Autumn Meeting will close with the secretary (Mr. H. S. Moss) on Friday next, A»pril 7th, at 8 p.m. Unusually good luck attended the visit of one Waimate resident and his family to the races (writes tire Press Waimate correspondent). His children during the course of the day, picked up a goodly collection of discarded totalisator tickets, which they took home to play with. When looked at, it was found that several of the tickets had been issued on Castellan, the horse which was placed second in the Waimate Cup only after Palestrina had been disqualified as the result of an inquiry. Immediately after the race many of the supporters of Castellan, who finished third, immediately discarded their tickets, which in this unusual manner passed into the hands of one who, if the report is correct, collected £25 on them. Sasaitof is reported to be used now by a Waikato priest, and he is not the only Melbourne Cup winner that has fallen into such good hands. Posenatus was ridden by one of the cloth. Lucky Escape, winner of the Perth Cup, now carries Father O’Grady, of Jarrahland. The body of the late Leri Hegarty reached Lyttelton by the Canopus on Sunday and the funeral took place at the Riccarton churchyard on Monday afternoon. All the horsemen at Riccarton on Saturday wore bands of crepe out of respect to the late jockey. *. « * * While being schooled at Otaki, Prominent (by Advance) fell and broke his shoulder and was destroyed. W. H. Bowden, who was riding him, escaped injury. The gelding Whiritas, by Kilbroney —Equitas, recently broke a fetlock while training at Fordell. Particulars to hand go to show that Palestrina and Foo Chow divided th« favouritism for the Cheviot Cup. After being in the rear for most of. the journey, Palestrina moved up on the outside as the field swung into line for home. She soon had Nautical and Foo Chow’s measure, but found a much more difficult proposition in Castellan. Both were hard at it from the distance, and in a battle-royal Castellan just held his advantage to the post. Though beaten, the honours of the race rested with Palestrina, whose effort, for a three-year-old, was full of merit. She did not get any too good a passage, and had to make up a lot of ground over the last half mile. Castellan, on the other hand, was always well placed and his condition reflected every credit on his trainer. No excuse can be found for Foo Chow’s failure, while Kilmoon was backward, but should be all the better for the race. Warlove burst a hoof the other morning, and will be retired to the stud. She has been disappointing for some time, and has cost backers a lot of money.

Although there were only three starters in the New Zealand St. Leger, the victory of Mr. J. S. McLeod’s Kick Off was a very meritorious one, as he was up against a good one in Pluto who he defeated handsomely. The success of the Hawke’s Bay-owned horse was anticipated by a large number in Hastings.

The Christchurch special correspondent says:—“Castellan won the Cheviot Cup, but had Palestrina had a more experienced horseman in the saddle she would probably have won. In its report of the Wellington meeting, the “Dominion” says:—“The St. Leger proved a good thing for Mr. J. S. McLeod’s All Black gelding Kick Off. Pluto, the favourite, raced very sour, and was never going like a winner. The Thompson Handicap went to the locally-owned Printemps after a good finish. Silver Peak, the run-ner-up, did not have the best of luck, as she was in the “call” until the last furlong and Gasbag was compelled to cover a bit of extra ground on the turn. Anomaly ran badly, and on that form it does not look worth while taking him to Riccarton. Anomaly started favourite for the Thompson Handicap with Askari, Insurrection and Silver Peak next in order. From the jump off Blackmail rushed to the front followed by Gasbag, Quest, Anomaly and Printemps. At the half-mile Anomaly was nearest to the leader, and he joined her at file straight entrance. Two furlongs from home Gasbag was with the other pair, and Marqueteur got up on the outside. Printemps then shot out, and Gasbag was nearest to him. Inside the distance Silver Peak put in a run on the outside. A great race to the post saw Printemps win by a neck from Silver Peak, with Gasbag a head away. Marqueteur was right up in fourth place and then came Trespass and Blackmail, the last to finish being Askari, Aureate, and Martial Dawn. Mr. J. M. Cameron left for Sydney on Thursday with Molyneaux, Tigrinia and Chant Royal. It is confidently anticipated that Molyneaux will win a race or two in Australia.
