The Bevd. D. C. Bates, Dominion Meteorologist, telegraphs as follows for 24 hours from 9 a.m. this day:—The indications are for westerly moderate to strong winds freshening and backing by west to south. The weather appears likely to be cloudy and unsettled. Rain probable. Barometer has a rising tendency.

Legal argument was heard at the Napier Civil Court this morning in the action Charles F. Oak versus W. S. Brown, claiming £6O being £5O balance on purchase money alleged to be due and £lO interest. Judgment was reserved.

There will he a considerable reduction in the defence staffs within the next few weeks. Only one SergeantMajor will remain in Napier. 'The units are being reduced anil the present non-effectives will probably bo retired to the reserve.

A letter addressed to the bailiff was read in the Napier Police Court in which a native remarked that he was afraid he (the writer) would be murdered if he attempted to serve a summons on another native mentioned. He was sending the summons back and would advise the bailiff when the defaulter arrived. Counsel remarked that the letter might be useful later if anything happened to the bailiff.

A defended action was commenced in the Napier Civil Court this morning in which Samuel J. Montgomery, plumber of Taradale, proceeded against Charles Codde sheep-farmer, for £l9 18s for a trough ami fittings to supply water to a paddock owned by defendant at Taradale and which defendant desired to lease to Constable Gartley Mr Humphries represented plaintiff and Mr M. R. Grant the defendant. The case is proceeding.

Mr G. F. Roach, chairman of the H.B. Education Board, has received a telegram from the Minister for Education (Hon. C. J .Parr), saying that he has definitely fixed his visit to the Hawke’s Bay district for next week, leaving Wellington on Monday. He will stop the night in Dannevirke, opening the schools there on Tuesday and he will be in Napier on Wednesday leaving on his return to Wellington on Thursday.

Mr R. W. Dyer, S.M., will have a field day at the Hastings Court sittings to-morrow, when he will be called upon to deal with a lengthy police list, including failing to attend drill, two charges of breach of. the building by-laws, two applications for maintenance, and a case of theft, a prosecution for crossing the railway in front of a train a few cases of riding bicycles on a footpath, a case of not allowing a vehicle room to pass and the three charges of arson which, last however, may be further adjourned. The civil business numbers 90 cases, including 21 judgment summonses and eleven defended actions.

At the Napier Civil Court this morning judgment by default was given by Mr R. W. Dyer. S.M. in the following undefended civil actions:. B. Steinmetz v. C. B. R. MaJltby, £64 9/2 costs £4 16/; A. Simmonds Ltd., v. G. Pepper £2 15/, costs 23/6; Dolan and Rogers v. E. J. Oliver, £4B 8/3, costs £4 2/6; Acetone Company v. W. Anderson, £3 2/6, costs 23/6; Waiapu Board of Diocesan Trustees v J. W. White, £l5 15/, costs £2 14/. Judgment summonses were dealt with as follows: M. Anaru to pay Cox and Co., £4 2/6 at the rate of 10/- weekly,, in default 10 days’ imprisonment; *Akuhata Puna to pay Cotterill and Humphries £2 1/ at the rate of 5/- monthly, in default 7 days.
