WATER FOR NAPIER SOUTH.

REPORT BY OVERSEER

Reporting to the Napier Borough Council last evening the borough overseer (Air. T. Dix) submitted the scheme of “reticulation” for the Napier South water supply. The scheme provides for two feeders —one from the 6-inch main which is now in Todd street as far as the boundary drain and will be extended to join the 6-inch main, which runs along the entire length of Nelson Crescent. The other feeder is from Thackeray street and it . runs right down Kennedy road with a 6-inch main after connecting up with Nelson Crescent main. The scheme then breaks up from these two main lines into a series of 6-inch circuits with intermediate 4-inch main as is clearly shown on the plan. Alains are all to be laid along the footpaths. Fire plugs have been allowed for at intervals of 270 feet. The cost of the pipes, etc., was derived from some recent quotes, but when the definite specification is prepared and competitive prices called that amount may be reduced. The system outlined, the engineer considers, is capable of providing water for domestic and fire fighting purposes for a population of 5000 people, but of course it will be necessary to find this amount of water before the thing is wholly practicable. He understands that money has been raised to provide for this—sinking additional wells in McLean Park and putting in a new collecting main, etc. from there to the receiving tanks. He has gone into the matter and considers it advisable to sink-at least five wells and run these into suitable concrete collecting tanks as at Nelson Park. Then from these thanks a 12-inch collecting main should be laid via Latham and Afunroe streets to the receiving tanks in Dalton street. His estimate for sinking the wells and laying the 12-inch collecting main is approximately £4OOO. The reticulation as outlined herein he estimates will cost approximately £12.000 plus £lOOO for wells. Total £16.000. These prices are for east iron pipes, etc. He had a quote for Mannesmann steel tubing which would bring the price down somewhat and though it has many good points it is a debatable question as to which is tho better suited for the work. A committee was set up to bring down a further report.
