NAPIER CLUB'S CARNIVAL.

WORLD RECORD LOWERED BY MISS HOEFT.

SOME SPLENDID RACES.

After a day which was overcast and threatening the atmosphere warmed up, the wind dropped, and splendid weather greeted the Napier Swimming Club’s carnival, held at the Napier baths last evening. There was a crowded attendance, and many were turned away, the club being unable to find a place in which to put them, ine chief attraction was Miss Pauline Hoeft, who has been successful recently in reducing the 440 and 220 world’s record and who was set the task in Napier ot reducing the world - s record of 100 metres. blie swam in an invitation race of tms length, accompanied by Miss Pin Page, New Zealand s intermediate lady champion, and Air U. E. Chatfield, of Waipukurau. Miss Hoeft and Mr Chatfield set out over two lengths in fine style but after this the lady forged ahead and a remarkable race saw her at the tape a couple of yards ahead of Cnatiieid and some 15 ahead of Miss Page. The announcement a few seconus later that Miss Hoeft had reduced the world s record ot liniii. 10 1-osecs., held by Miss Durack, by two seconds dead, was received with the applause it deserved. The public had been asked to see a record broken and they were pleased. in tne third length. Miss Hoeft went crooked and as tier turns could be improved on it may be expected that she will one day reduce her own record with ease. She is a pretty swimmer, and gets a mar" velious amount of result irom a long reach and even action. Hiss Hoeft aud Miss Page, who was also favourably received, swam in several handicap events. Miss Hoeft’s time in the ladies’ 50 yards was 29 3-osecs. equal to the time put up by Miss Bleibtrey when she attempted to lower her own world’s record for the distance.
