THE NAVY LEAGUE.
ESSAY COMPETITION. The annual essay competition of the Napier branch of the Navy League was judged this year by the Rev. J. A. Asher, the Very Rev. Dean Mayne and Messrs J, AV. Cargill, H. de Donne and R. D. D McL-can. The committee had 67 selected essays submitted to them and after careful study allocated tho prizes in the various sections as follows: — > Primary (junior).—Subject, “Nelson as a Sailor” : Merle McCrea (Napier Central) 1, Raymond Brown (Hastings Street) 2, R. Horton (Heretaunga Havelock North), 3. Primary (senior). “Raleigh as an Empire Builder” : Herbert Brewster (Boys’ High School) 1. Gwen Holmes (Girls’ High 'School), 2, Julian Gregg (Central) 3. Secondary (junior). “Gibraltar, its Story and Importance” : Edna Bayliss (Technical School) 1, Gordon White (Boys’ High School) 2. Margaret Bird (Girls’ High School) 3. Secondary (senior).--“The Dependence of the Empire on tho Sea’’ . lone J. Reid (Girls’ High School) 1, Dudley AV. Ashcroft (Boys’ High School) 2, Jessie McVicar (Technical School) 3. The presentation of these prizes hy the president of the League will take place on Nelson Day, Friday next, at the Band Rotunda on the Marine Parade. The presentation will be made at 3 p.m. in tho presence of the assembled schools.
