A sensational robbery took place at tho suburban branch of a local bank the other morning (says the Dunedin << Timos ,, ) : It appears that a young man went into the banking chamber and was given permission to use the telephone, which is situated in close proximity to a desk where money to be transferred to the bank in the city is counted. When tho money was brought as usual to the city it was found that tho sum of £2OO was missing. Suspicion rests on tho young man who used the telephone, as, while he was doing so, the 1 clerk’s attention was diverted from the j desk for a short space of time, and in ; tho interval the user of the telephone! disappeared.

As an indication of tho growth of dairying in North Auckland, it may be mentioned that last Tuesday a special train left New Plymouth for Northern Wairoa, Auckland, carrying over 500 yearling grade Jerseys, and a truck of yearling pedigree bulls, the bulk of them being lor Messrs., Finlayson, Dargaville (states the “New Zealand Herald”), lhe value of the consignment was estimated at over £5OOO. laranaki farmers are making a specialty of the breeding of dairy stock and some valuable butter-fat produc. ing strains of Jerseys are now well established. It Is not unconion in that province for dairy farmers to pay from £lOO to £l5O for high-class cows and heifers, and such animals, even on their commercial output, are said to give much greater profits on their capital cost than the ordinary-priced cows Wh dairy stock at over Cloo <>ach,’ and dairying land at ovcj £lOO an acre,’ it seems a problem how dairying is made to pay, and vet it is claimed that under such conditions dairying nays better than where eheap hut inferior are kept on cheap hut inferior land.
