FREEZING TRADE WAGES.
DISPUTE GOES TO ARBITRATION COURT. Regarding the differences which exist between the employers and the employees in the freezing trade, the companies have filed a» request for a new award based on the 1919 rates and conditions. These were 35/- per 100 for sheep, 32/6 per 100 for lambs, and 2/3 per head for cattle. The unions have responded with a demand for a new set of conditions and rates appreciably above last year’s which were £2 2s per 100 for sheep, 37s per 100 for lambs and 2s 8d per head for cattle. The companies refused to accept this and the matter was referred to the Conciliation Board but no agreement, except on minor points, could be arrived at and the whole question has now been sent forward to the Arbitration Court, which will sit in Wellington towards the end of the month, to decide the matter.
One of the employees concerned, informed a reporter that the men were willing to* go back to work at last year’s prices , under the conditions then obtaining.
