i N.Z. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. MRS. GUY WILLIAMS WINS. GREAT GAME WITH MISS PAYTON Wellington, October 11. I A large crowd ol golfing enthusiasts watched tho final of tho ladies’ goll championship at Heretaunga to-day. Despite tho wetness of the thick grass the players had a very considerable following, who braved the steady if , not heavy ram. The contestants were Mrs Guy Williams (Masterton) and Miss M. Payton (Auckland), and physically there could lyirdiy have been greater difference between tho pair. The former is tall and strong and the latter short and slight. As was expected. the heavy course favoured Mrs. Williams, whose driving lor the greater part carried her many yards beyond her opponent, but Miss Payton, by means of some remarkable recoveries, approaching and putting, made up this handicap. After being 3 , down at the turn in the first 18 holes she succeeded in getting all square at tho 15th, and again at the 17th, ami at the 18th, the end of the first round, was only 1 down. At no stage during the morning round was Miss Pay ton more than 3 down. At the 17th, when 1 down, she was hunkered, but played a superb lifting shot to tho green and holed in 4 to 5. making the scores all square. Mrs. AVilliams won the next in 4 to 5 witli a» 4 ft. putt, and so was 1 up when tho second round was commenced in steady rain. 1 Mrs Williams started well on tho second round. She missed her putt, and the first hole was halved in 5. but won tho second in 4 and the third in throe, makintr her 3 up. The fourth, fifth, and sixth holes wore halved.
