It is understood that Mr H. Dixon, postmaster at Featherston, will shortly retire on superannuation. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister of Lands and Repatriation, has returned to Wellington after visiting Tiratu soldier settlement, near Dannevirke. On inquiry to-day it was ascertained that the improvement in Mr George Nelson’s condition continues to be sustain- . ed. Miss F. Cook, of Dunedin, who has been saying with Mrs W. A. Whitlock, left this morning for Masterton where she will say for a time before proceeding South. Mr B. K. Long, the foreign editor of the London “Times,” .who recently toured New Zealand, has been appointed editor of the “Cape Times,” in succession to the late Sir Maitland Park. Professor Patrick Geddes, who has recently completed the planning of tho Jewish University in Jerusalem for tho Zionist organisation of London, is a brother of the late Mr McKail Geddes, of Auckland. The Rev. J. M. Simmonds, of Auckland, returned from Australia by the Niagara yesterday. Mr. Simmonds has been touring Australia for some time studying matters connected with forestry. Mr. J. A. J. Hunter, who won the Maranoa (Q.) Federal seat for the country party, after it was held by Labour for nearly twenty years, is a brother of the Rev. S. F. Hunter, M.A., 8.D., Oamaru. The Auckland “Star” reports tho engagement of Mrs E. Brown, widow of the late Mr Thomas Brown, of 30, Brown’s Road, St. Alban’s, Christchurch, to Mr. Justice Herdman. Mr. Herdman is being transferred to the Auckland circuit. Mr H. G. Sustins. who has been postmaster at Carterton for the past 9| years, is retiring from the service op September 39th. Mr Suslins entered ♦he Wellington office as a cadet in 1876, and consequently has 43 years’ service to bis credit. M»* W. H. Lunn, manager of the Hastings branch of the Union Bank of Australia, leaves to-day on two months’ holiday leave, which ho intends to spend in Australia. Mr L. B. Rowe, of Hunterville, takes over the management during his absence. The Rev. J. J. Lewis, one of the best known ministers of the Methodist Church in New Zealand, has arrived in Palmerston North. Mr Lewis will remain there and take the Rev G. 8. Cook’s duties during tho absence of the latter, who is recuperating at the Helensville hot springs. Mr W. Hope, late postmaster at Porangahau, was presented by the people of that district with a cheque for a substantial amount on the occastd of his departure for Palmerston North to take up a position in tho mail room. Mrs Hope was presented by the Anglican Ladies’ Guild with a Doulton bowl. At tho Nelson Cathedral last week the Bishop of Nelson unveiled a memorial brass tablet in memory of Lieut. Harold Kempthorne, Royal Field Artillery, who was killed at Ypres on 24th August, 1917. He was a son of Archdeacon and Mrs Kempthorne, of Brightwater, and was an Old Boy of Nelson College. Hector Gray, the well-known New Zealand horseman at present riding so successfully iu England, says in a letter to bis mother that ho will return to New Zealand next Christmas. It is his intention t-o take his wife and family with him when he leaves again for the English racing season. Gray had a ride in tho Grand Prix de Paris, his mount running third. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart was accorded a cir;c reception in Nelson yesterday. Referring to the educational prospects of Nelson, the Minister said he believed in this connection alone there was a great luture before it. He was particular!v interested in the subject, because in Dunedin it had been his aim to foster educational institutions. It was posfible, whether it had great industrial probabilities or not. to make 5 elson the Mecca for students from New Zealand as well as Australia. Nelson did well to take pride in its institutions. They had had generous citizens.
