Shipowners’ Decision.
CREWS WILL BE PAID OFF. FAILING WATERSIDEBS’ REPLY. UNENCOURAGING OUTLOOK. (Per Press Association.! Wellington, March 2. The shipowners decided to-day that failing a satisfactory reply from the watersiders, ships crews will be paid off on Friday and the vessels laid up. It was also decided to severely restrict the class of cargo carried by the ferry boats. The general position remains unchanged, and it is not regarded as encouraging. A DEAD PORT. Auckland, March 2. The port of Auckland bears a dead appearance, owing to the entire absence of arrivals or departures, other than the coastal fleet. It is estimated that there are a thousand men without work. Twenty-seven vessels at the wharves, in the stream, or in dock, are idle. POSITION AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, March 1. There were no fresh developments on the Auckland waterfront to-day. A general meeting o)t watersiders will be held to-morrow for the purpose of considering various aspects of the dispute The number of watersiders employed on the wharves has gradually been decreasing, until now only about 2001 are working daily out of a total of i 1400. Some 200 men have accepted i employment elsewhere. ,
