FIRE DESTROYS HOMESTEAD.
Christchurch, Jan. 4. “Keinton Combe,” Waiau, North Canterbury, the residence of Colonel R. A. Chaffey, formerly Officer Commanding the Canterbury Military District, was destroyed by fire this morning. A fire had been started in the laundry and it is supposed that while the laundress was temporarily absent sparks ignited wood in the vicinity and the whole place was a blazing mass before the outbreak was discovered Unfortunately the water supply system was located tn the laundry and acces 1 - to it was cut off by the flames Shearers and others managed to save some of the furniture and a nearbycottage. The building, which con tained fifteen rooms, was insured in the State office for £2.000 and the fur niture in the South British office for £575.
